AGE IS NOT A FACTOR

Chelsea defender José Bosingwa has claimed that the success the club has achieved in the Champions League this season in the form of the very first European cup clearly shows that age is not a factor for achieving success at football club, according to the Chelsea news website.

Chelsea have been often criticised for having a lot of old players in the squad. In fact, most of the squad currently at Chelsea was signed by former manager José Mourinho more than five years ago. As a result, a number of the important numbers of the squad are clearly past their best and into their 30s.

Despite this, Chelsea managed to win the Champions League this season when they were clearly not expected to do the same due to the sufferings they have had in the league under manager Andre Villas-Boas. The sacking of the Portuguese coupled with the arrival of Roberto di Matteo worked in favour of Chelsea after they achieved a remarkable cup double by winning the FA Cup and the Champions League. The 29 year old Portuguese right back played for Chelsea in the final of the Champions League against Bayern Munich, in which they won the match 4-3 on penalties.

“They said the team was old, but we overcame all this. And it ended up being a very positive season. He Villas-Boas told us we would be European champions. It was a funny thing. Following the Napoli defeat, he said we would be European champions. We never stopped believing and ended up winning the FA Cup and Champions League through some great goals from Fernando Torres,” Bosingwa told A Bola.

Even though he has just won the Champions League title with Chelsea, the 29-year-old defender is expected to be released by the club. He is at the end of his current contract, although Chelsea do have the option to extend the deal by one year.
